Today was a pretty light travel day. I got off to a late start since I slept a little later than anticipated. Got up about 9 and after a quick shower and cleaning up about 400 stacked up emails, headed out around 10:15.

Decided to hit a McDonald’s for a quick breakfast. Car in front at the drive through, didn’t look like the driver wanted anything, but the person in the back seat ordered through the open back door. Guess the window didn’t roll down beyond 3 inches. They pulled up to the first window, back door opens, they pay the cashier and pull to the second window. Same thing. I get to the first window and the cashier has no expression on his (or her, not sure) face. Doesn’t say a word, takes my card and hands it back with a receipt. No expression, nothing. Not sure if I would call it sad or scary. Get to second window and no one in sight. Takes them at least two minutes before I even see anyone near the window. Got my food and headed out as soon as possible.
Relatively uneventful drive through the western part of the Texas panhandle. Coupe of exceptions however. Hit the Amarillo city line and the city just stopped. It went from normal suburban sprawl to nothing. It was like the built a wall and said only brush and dirt beyond this point. It was also interesting watching the terrain change as I continued west. Slowly started to see small mesas and and rolling hills. After crossing into New Mexico the mountains began to become more obvious.
Was really tempted to head up to Santa Fe, (thanks to all for the recommendations from Christina’s post this morning) but decided to just set it aside and stay with the planned stop in Albuquerque. Found a really cute little motel near Old Town. Its called the Sandia Peak Inn. If you need a place to stay I couldn’t think of a much friendlier couple than Kay and Jay, the owners. The room was clean, very comfortable and just perfect. Its not the Ritz Carleton, but its the perfect place for a short stay. I’d come back here any time.
Alright, I need to wrap up now since I don’t want a repeat of staying up until after midnight last night. Most likely the reason for my late start this morning. Tomorrow morning I’ll be checking out the immediate area before heading out.
